Peaceful election for Ermelo
The municipal election, which took place on Wednesday, 18 May, went smooth and peaceful although it was expected to be more eventful after the recent protests due to the lack of service delivery. According to the Ermelo Police, who worked tirelessly to keep the calm during the local elections, they experienced a very calm election day and it surpassed their wildest expectations. Most officers worked from 05:00 to 20:00 on the days running up to the election, and on election day, some officers even worked for 24 hours non-stop. Lt Col Winnie Mavuso, as well as Col Phabethe (Overall Commander of police in Msukaligwa) noted that they are proud of the hard work done by their officers and thanks each and every one of them for keeping the peace and working tirelessly. Only one small incident was reported, when three suspects burnt tyres on Wednesday at the Wesselton Community hall. The local police, however, reacted quickly and the peace was restored. Through the 19 wards of Msukaligwa, the ANC received 81,58% of the votes, which ensures them 31 seats on the council. The Democratic Alliance (DA) received 13,16% of the votes, which ensures them 5 seats on the council.
